Merchants Runners Brave the Cold for Charity
The 21st anniversary of the Red Flannel Run last weekend had four Merchants Bonding runners participating among the 1600 assembled on behalf of the Des Moines YMCA. Our team said it was a great turnout, but not too crowded and it was fun to have everyone in their red flannel costumes.
It was only 18 degrees out as our four participants gathered for the race, which did not bother Karin Sorensen who said, " it wasn't very cold."
Assistant Mary Dafflitto echoed that saying she came prepared wearing layers but had to shed them during the three mile race. " I did the three-mile run," said Mary, "I finished in 30:47 and really wanted to get under 30 minutes, so I have a goal for next year. I'll be training my dog to run with me next year, he'll have fun!"
Underwriters John Tiedt and Cody White took on the five mile course with times of 39:01 and 40:29 respectively. Both said, " It was a lot of fun and I'd do it again next year."
Merchants Bonding Company was among the many corporate sponsors for the race. The event helps underprivileged children participate in YMCA activities all year. Organizers said the event raised nearly $35,000.
