Adopt a Family

Gift-giving and fundraising effort to help a Des Moines family in need.
The Community Outreach Council (COC) got Des Moines associates in the giving mood during the holiday season by adopting a family in need. The Adopt a Family fundraiser took the place of the Annual Money Challenge, a fundraising competition between associates and the Executive Committee to see which group gives more funds toward a charitable cause. The losing group was required to sing at the Holdiay Party. Fortunately, there was no singing at 2011's party!
Product Compliance Specialist, Connie Mendenhall, told the COC that there was a need to adopt families. She mentioned that her sister, an elementary school principal at Howe Elementary in Des Moines, knew of a family that could use some assistance this holiday season. Our adopted family has five boys aged 4 years to a freshman in high school.
The COC received a list of items that the boys wanted for Christmas, including toys and games, clothing, shoes, socks, iPods, movies, and Legos. Employees had the opportunity to choose gifts that they would like to purchase, or to donate funds that the COC used to purchase any unfulfilled gifts. The Marketing department also held a sale of Merchants clothing and other products, raising $220, with all proceeds going toward the Adopt a Family effort.
The response from Merchants associates was astounding. Every gift that the boys asked for was purchased, and the COC had enough funds left over to purchase the oldest boy a winter jacket, Santa presents from Mom and Dad, and Hy-Vee and Target gift cards for the family to enjoy a fabulous meal and pick up some everyday necessities. File and Mail Clerk, Jeanne Six, who had saved up all of her Jeans Day money to
contribute to the Annual Money Challenge, decided to give those funds to personally purchase pajamas for every member of our adopted family.
COC member Kara Waters said, "Without the support of each and every associate participating, the COC would not have been able to purchase anything more than one item for each child. Thank you to everyone that participated in this effort! The COC hopes you enjoyed a year without singing at the holiday party! We wish everyone a happy New Year, and we look foward to the upcoming year of giving back with you."
