E.H. Warner formed the first mutual surety company in the U.S. in 1933. Today, the board continues to consist of all family members. His son joined the business in the 1940s and served as Chairman Emeritus until his death in 2010 at age 90. His great-grandson became Merchants' President in 1996.
The legacy continues to grow. After 77 years, Merchants now does business in all 50 states, has its headquarters in Des Moines, Iowa, an Austin, Texas branch, a contract surety office in Dallas-Fort Worth, and more than 100 employees working to provide excellent underwriting and underwriting services to 2,500 agents.
