Intern Spotlight: Mallory Brown

July 16, 2019

With less than a month left in our internship program, Merchants has one more intern to introduce. Mallory Brown has been serving as an intern in our contract underwriting department. She plans to graduate from Iowa State University next spring with a degree in finance. We asked Mallory a few questions to get to know her better.

Q: What has your experience at Merchants been like this summer?

A: My experience these past few months has been awesome! Everyone I’ve met has been friendly, positive and upbeat which is a real credit to the culture at Merchants. Through rotations of each department, it became clear that it isn’t just one department or team that is this way, but it’s a constant theme throughout the company. Working in the contract underwriting department has been interesting from reviewing company financial statements to pulling company and personal credit reports. It has been the real-life work experience I hoped for to blend with what I’ve learned in the classroom.

Q: What are you hoping to get out of your internship?

A: I have always been a “people person” and good with numbers, but I am hoping to leave Merchants truly understanding my skill set and the value I can bring to a company upon graduation. I also hope to have a better understanding of surety and underwriting, and hope to apply what I’ve learned to my future career.

Q: What has been your favorite part of your internship?

A: It is tough to choose a favorite, but I have really enjoyed the one-on-one interactions to gain feedback on my work. Feedback is valuable as an intern and I find I really gain experience when discussing and reviewing my work. I also enjoy being questioned about specific formulas and working through scenarios with my manager.

Q: What do you like most about Merchants Bonding Company?

A: It’s cliché to say, but Merchants really is a family. Everyone is extremely friendly, welcoming, works well together and shows a mutual respect for each other. I think the size of the company allows for this kind of culture, whereas larger companies lose that personal touch. Now that I have been a part of this family it sets the bar high going forward.

We are happy to have you in our program this summer, Mallory!
