Focused on the Future

Nearly 80% of learning occurs through visual activities. Yet in the state of Iowa, it is estimated that 20,000 students do not have the glasses they need to see the board or read a book. Without the ability to see clearly, thousands of central Iowa students struggle to learn to read. And students who are not proficient in reading by the end of third grade are four times more likely to drop out of school.

Vision To Learn, a partnership of United Way of Central Iowa and Variety – the Children’s Charity of Iowa, seeks to give every child a chance to succeed in school and in life by bringing mobile clinics and trained eye care professionals directly to schools and community organizations. The program provides students with two free pairs of eyeglasses (one pair to take home and one to leave at school).

Funds raised through the 2021 Bill Warner Sr. Memorial Charity Golf Classic will go toward expanding efforts of bringing eye care services and glasses directly to students who would not otherwise receive quality vision care.

Remembering Bill Warner, Sr.

Bill Warner, Sr. was the grandson of E.H. Warner, Merchants Bonding Company’s founder, and father of Bill Warner, Jr., Merchants’ current Senior Vice President - Operations. Bill Warner, Sr. held many roles during his 30-year career at Merchants, becoming the President in 1985 and Chairman of the Board in 1993.

Bill loved Merchants, but his real passion was sports. He was a lifelong Chicago Cubs fan and supported Louisiana State University athletics since his enrollment in 1966. Bill was especially fond of golf. He played on his high school golf team, qualified for and played in two National Amateur tournaments, was a medalist in the Iowa State Amateur, and was a past club champion in Scottsdale, Arizona. He was a member of Wakonda Club for many years.

Bill passed away of cancer in June of 2000. In 2010, the first Golf Classic was held in Bill’s honor, raising more than $70,000 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. The impact of the biennial Golf Classic has grown immensely since then, raising more than $600,000 for local charities.

Past Beneficiaries

In 2008, Merchants established the Merchants Bonding Company Foundation. Two years later we hosted our first Golf Classic. It was, and continues to be, a wonderful way to honor Bill’s legacy and give back to our community in a significant way.
