Stepping Onto a New Stage

July 26, 2024

Hoyt Sherman Place is widely recognized as one of Des Moines, Iowa’s cultural gems, with a mission to “create outstanding experiences for the cultural, historic, and educational benefit of Iowa’s residents and communities.” Merchants Bonding Company is very proud to announce that our Chairman of the Board and President, Larry Taylor, is stepping onto a new stage - joining the Board of Directors of the Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation.

Taylor, an enthusiastic supporter of the arts, was drawn to the mission of Hoyt Sherman Place along with its rich history of women’s leadership, “I have seen many amazing performances in the theater, and am excited to support the work of the Foundation which was created to administer, maintain, and preserve this special place.” The Hoyt Sherman Place Foundation was established in 1994 by the Des Moines Women’s Club.

A Rich History

For more than a hundred years, the histories of the Des Moines Women’s Club and Hoyt Sherman Place have intertwined. The mansion was built in 1877 and gifted to the city of Des Moines in 1904. The Women’s Club began holding their meetings at Hoyt Sherman in 1907 and still do to this day! In exchange for the space, they pledged to have an auditorium built that would serve as a venue to bring nationally known speakers and entertainers to Des Moines.  Completed in 1923, the space continues to fulfill its original purpose, serving as a vibrant center for the arts in our community. Taylor says he’s “looking forward to working with the Foundation's CEO Robert Warren, the incredible staff, and fellow board members to continue the mission and vision of Hoyt Sherman Place.”
